New Delhi: A video of former Maharashtra MLA Waris Pathan arguing with a police official over offering namaz at a mosque has been widely shared on social media to falsely claim that he is “threatening” police to let the mosque remain open amid the nationwide lockdown.

In the 55-second video, Pathan, the former AIMIM MLA from Byculla in Mumbai, is asking the police official not to trouble those offering namaz

“Deshmukh sahab, I have never disrupted law and order. These are innocent people who have been offering namaz at this mosque for 40 years. Don’t try to shut down the mosque or the loudspeakers. Don’t enter our mosques with shoes on,” Pathan says in the video, which went viral on Facebook.

A user named Col Retd Rummy Patel shared the video Tuesday, saying: “See their dadagiri with our Coronavirus warriors who is doing their duty towards us to save our lives & these type of mullahs are threatening the police officer who is doing his duty very honestly (sic).”

His post has been shared over 800 times until the publication of this report.

Patel also shared the video in a group called ‘We Support Republic’ on Facebook, where it has been shared over 1,000 times so far.

Several other Facebook users shared the video, saying: “If this is the situation, Don’t expect to open the lockdown on 3rd may 2020 (sic).”

On Twitter, the video has been shared by people who tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

A user named Rishabh Singh shared the video, saying: “Waris Pathan is showing his strength in Byculla, Mumbai.”

The video is also doing the rounds on WhatsApp.

Fact check

The video is actually four years old, and two minutes and 16 seconds long.

Pathan was arguing with the police official in the video after he asked him to lower the volume of the loudspeaker at the mosque.

After a few seconds of confrontation with the official, in the rest of the video, Pathan is seeing telling people nearby to maintain law and order, and also that the police have not come to disrupt their namaz.

  1. So what is not a crime to threaten to attack a police officer by a Muslim radical? What stupid coverup by this leftist medical saying that this was an old video? Any day the threatening of a police officer is a heinous crime under IPC. What the hell this Hyderabadi Muslim radical fellow do in Byculla? Shivsena should shake his head out of shame…Maharashtra CM should take cognise of this video content and must book this Muslim radical fellow.

  2. Action should certainly be taken for circulating this video with absolutely false comment with potential to spread communal unrest. At the same time whenever the incident in the video took place, high handed behaviour with police by any leader should not be tolerated. Hope suitable action was taken against the leader at that time.

  3. Now the fact is in front of the people what action would be taken against Rummy Patel and Rishab Singh who circulating a fake news on social media.

  4. It’s clear that journalists “majority ” of whom are “left liberal anti HINDU secular ” while “minority ” of them never questions what drastic change their community require to realise this is 2021 but are there to project themselves as VICTIMS and that’s why they indulge in violence . Every illegal activity is justified through some logic of victimisation.

  5. The main issue is “are the Islamists following law and order” in this crisis?

What does the behaviour* of our Tablighi Jamaat friends suggest?
*behaviour for reference: spitting on doctors, sexually harrassing female nurses and lady doctors, physical attacks on medical staff and causing mayhem in quarantine facilities.
