New Delhi: A video has gone viral with the claim that a Muslim man and woman beat up a police officer at Civil Lines in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, for issuing them a fine.

In the 25-second video, shared by Twitter user Gagan Goyal Thursday morning, a woman in a salwar kameez can be seen hitting the officer with a blue chappal (slipper) and a man in a checkered shirt striking his face while others try to pry them away.

Goyal, who is an engineer according to her bio, tagged the Uttar Pradesh Police and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in her tweet. The caption accompanying the video, in Hindi, read: “This video shows what will happen to India’s future. The truth is this country faces more threats from within than the outside”. The video has over 47,000 views and has been retweeted 3,000 times.

Activist Madhu Kishwar, who has over 2 million followers on Twitter, also shared the video late Thursday night with the caption, “Koi hairaani nahi ki desh bhar mein police afsar Muslim ilaakon mein jaane se darte hai! (It’s no wonder police officers across the country are afraid to go to Muslim localities)”

She also accused the government of lacking the “courage” to openly call out such attempts to “break” the nation.

This is not the first time Kishwar has spread misinformation. Two months ago, Kolkata Police booked the activist for tweeting a video of an Islamic rally in Bangladesh, claiming that it was held in Kolkata. Kishwar subsequently apologised saying she received the video from a friend.

The video, however, is at least three years old and was shared in August 2018.

The incident took place in Balram Nagar on the Loni border, Ghaziabad at a State Bank of India branch. A police constable posted at the bank was beaten up by relatives of a customer over some corrections in an Aadhaar card.

According to the police, a local resident, identified as Imran, had come to the bank to get some corrections made on his Aadhaar card but was asked to leave after jumping the queue and trying to speak to the bank official directly.

The accused returned with a group of 10-15 people, including a woman, who allegedly beat up the constable. An FIR was registered against the group for rioting and assaulting a police officer on duty.

On 27 August 2018, Ghaziabad Police released a video statement on the incident and said that action was being taken against those in the video.
