New Delhi: An image showing Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s Punjab unit chief, Bhagwant Mann, sitting in front of liquor stores has gone viral on social media. However, the image is photoshopped.

Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Delhi BJP spokesperson Naveen Kumar Jindal, shared the image on Twitter. Jindal posted the photo with a caption in Hindi saying, “Both are sitting exactly at their respective places.”

His post was liked by more than 10,000 handles and was retweeted more than 1,700 times.

Bharat Singh who, according to his Facebook profile, is a spokesperson for the BJP’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in New Delhi, also shared the image on Facebook with the same caption as Kumar.

While one Twitter user wrote, “Earlier, no Chief Minister had campaigned from such a grassroots level,” another shared the image saying, “Country liquor and English liquor store together. Both are sitting exactly at their respective positions.”

Pointing to how Kejriwal and Mann are seated in front of English and Desi liquor stores respectively, one user wrote, “Both are seated according to their own standard.”

Many shared the image with similar or identical captions.

One user said, “The two are sitting quite appropriately by their own addresses. But, in this, one is desi, but the other is foreign. What rule is this, brother?”

Fact check

The image is photoshopped and dates back to Kejriwal’s visit to Punjab on 14 January, when he and Mann went to Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s constituency, Chamkaur Sahib, and spoke to farmers about various issues ranging from delays in getting payment for sugarcane produce to youth unemployment in the state.

The image of the leaders is a screengrab from a video of the visit, uploaded by AAP on its YouTube channel, in which Kejriwal and Mann are seen sitting on a cot placed in a mustard field.

The original image was used by The Tribune in a report on the event.

The image of the liquor stores is one that was used by Navbharat Times in November 2020 for a story on liquor stores in Lucknow being closed ahead of an election.

Patrika had used the same image in a report dated February 2020 on liquor stores in Noida being closed ahead of an election.
