New Delhi: A video misrepresenting an attack by policemen on Muslim youth during the Delhi riots of 2020 is now doing the rounds portraying the victims as “traitors” who raised “anti-India” slogans.

The men are seen lying on the ground singing the national anthem, with blood splattered on parts of their bodies. Surrounding them in the background, policemen are seen taunting them, hitting them with lathis, and forcing them to sing “properly” while recording the incident on their mobile phones.

Two years after it first went viral, this video is now doing the rounds with claims that the men were from Rajasthan and were caught in Kashmir raising “traitorous” slogans such as “Pakistan Zindabad”.

“In the future, they will think a hundred times before raising such slogans,” says the viral post, which is doing the rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. It has been shared at least 6,500 times across all three platforms, and viewed thousands more times.

What actually happened

The video is of a group of Muslim men who were assaulted and detained by the Delhi Police during the riots, in which 53 people were killed, most of them Muslims.

The incident took place on 25 February 2020, and the video footage went viral shortly after. Of the five men pictured in the video, Faizan, 23, later died in hospital. His mother alleged that he had died of complications arising from the assault, and that the police had denied him medical attention while in custody.

She demanded a court-appointed probe into his death, which is still ongoing. No arrests have yet been made in the case.

In August 2021, the Delhi Police had reportedly identified three officers who were involved. But by January this year, the Delhi Police informed the Delhi High Court that it had “identified and questioned” just one officer, a head constable named Ravinder.

“It has been two years, you have been able to just identify some person,” Justice Mukta Gupta questioned of the investigating officers. The case has now been adjourned till 22 February.
