New Delhi: A video of violent clashes between the Uttar Pradesh Police and farmers in the Unnao district Saturday has gone viral on social media. In the clip, a policeman is seeing hitting an unarmed man lying on the ground.

However, it has now emerged that handles associated with the Congress party shared a clipped video to claim that the police was mercilessly beating up an ‘unconscious’ man.

The farmers were protesting over alleged land acquisition by the Yogi Adityanath government. Photos and videos of the incident, in which construction machinery was also set ablaze, have been shared widely.

The All India Mahila Congress posted one video to condemn police action against a “half-dead” man. The tweet, in Hindi, addressed CM Yogi Adityanath, and stated that an “Unnao farmer, demanding compensation for land, is still lying on the ground half-dead but the police continues to beat him up. This is the extent of tyranny. Farmers, youth and women… there is no escape from the atrocities of your administration”. It was shared over 200 times and received more than 540 likes.

Ajay Kumar Lallu, president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, also shared the video and said the man was beaten “unconscious” by the police.

Video authentic but clipped

While the video is authentic and the man was indeed beaten with a stick while lying on the ground, it isn’t true that he was unconscious or half-dead.

The Uttar Pradesh Police Tuesday shared the entire video, where the man can be seen getting up and running away without any apparent injury.
