This Covid wave in India steeper than the first one, positivity rate over 10%

New Delhi: Active Covid-19 cases in the country tripled — from 3 lakh to over 9 lakh — in just 18 days this year. In 2020, it took 59 days for the cases to triple.

A comparison of the rising side of the first and second wave of the Covid-19 curve shows that the cases in the country are rising much faster this time, despite the fact the spread of the disease is much better understood now.

The graph shows that while in 2020, it took 25 days for active cases to double from 3 lakh to 6 lakh, in 2021, the cases doubled in 12 days.

At this rate, India is likely to surpass the last Covid-19 peak in the next two days.

Active cases in India increased to 9,10,319 — the highest since October. Maharashtra continues to have the highest share of active cases in the country.

Over the last 24 hours, 1,26,789 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. This is the highest number of cases India has reported in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic.

As many as 685 people in the country died of Covid-19 over the last 24 hours. This brings the country’s total Covid-19 toll to 1,66,862.

Punjab’s case fatality rate is 2.80 — the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 1.78 while that of Sikkim reduced to 2.15. The overall CFR for India is now 1.29 per cent.

The rapid drop in fatality rate can be attributed to the rise in number of active cases.

In the last 24 hours, 29,79,292 vaccine doses were delivered across the country. So far, 9,01,98,673 vaccine doses have been administered in India.

As many as 1,14,35,646 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India so far.

In the last 24 hours, 12,37,781 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,229 government laboratories and 1,218 private laboratories. Over 25.2 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Test Positivity Rate

The test positivity over the last 24 hours increased to 10.2 per cent. Positivity above 10 per cent indicates that testing is inadequate. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has also increased to 5.1 per cent.

As many as 59,258 patients have been discharged from Covid-19 hospitals across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,18,51,393.

As many as 1,29,28,574 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Active cases in Maharashtra increased to 5,02,982, with 59,907 new cases reported from the state since yesterday.

A total of 31,73,261 people from Maharashtra have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 56,652 people have died, with 322 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Chhattisgarh reported 10,310 new cases in the last 24 hours — the highest in the state since the beginning of the pandemic. This takes the number of active cases in the state to 58,883.

A total of 3,96,579 cases were detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. As many as 53 Covid-19 patients have died in the state in the last 24 hours, which takes the Covid-19 death toll to 4,469.

Active cases in Karnataka increased to 49,273, with 6,976 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

A total of 10,33,560 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 35 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 12,731.

In Uttar Pradesh, active cases increased to 31,987, making it the state with the fourth-highest number of active cases. With 6,002 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours, a total of 6,45,930 people in the state have reported to be Covid positive since the beginning of the pandemic.

The state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 8,964, with 40 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases increased to 31,806, with 3,502 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

This takes the total number of cases detected from the state to 11,44,594 since the beginning of the pandemic. With 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,710.
