New Delhi: The Neurosurgery Department at Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has recently acquired an advanced intraoperative Ultrasound (iUS) machine from Wipro GE Healthcare South Asia. This is the first installation of the state-of-the-art iUS system in the country, a PIB press release stated.

The iUS machine is used for performing complex brain tumour surgeries. The system is cost-effective and can easily be used by neurosurgeons. This is making it possible to remove tumour remnants even if they are located near critical functioning brain regions.

The machine was unveiled on Saturday, June 1, at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Parel, Mumbai. The event was attended by Dr. Shailesh Shrikhande, Dy. Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. Aliasgar Moiyadi, Chief of Neurosurgery, Tata Memorial Centre, and Shri Chaitanya Sarawate, Managing Director, Wipro GE Healthcare South Asia. Dr. Aliasgar Moiyadi, Chief of Neurosurgery, Tata Memorial Centre, said that the iUS machine is likely to benefit many patients who cannot access state-of-the-art care at subsidized rates elsewhere.

He further said that the machine is less costly than other intraoperative imaging systems like intraoperative MRI, which is crucial for resource-constrained healthcare systems. The department has also conducted training courses in India and globally to ensure that neurosurgeons have the skills to safely and accurately perform iUS-guided surgeries. The department is hoping that this new technique will revolutionise neurosurgery and provide better treatment options to patients suffering from brain tumours.
