India’s daily Covid positives drop below 30,000 but cases rise in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: The number of new Covid-19 cases dropped below 30,000 in the last 24 hours, while the number of tests conducted was also low.

India’s overall active caseload continues to decline but Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh are witnessing an increase in cases.

In the last 24 hours, 27,071 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country.

The active Covid cases in the country declined to 3,52,586 in the past 24 hours. This accounts for 3.57 per cent of the total cases detected in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the past 24 hours, 336 coronavirus deaths were reported across the country. This has brought the Covid death toll in the country to 1,43,355.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) continues to be the highest in the country at 3.16 — increasing slightly from last week. However, the number of active cases in the state has declined to under 7,076.

Maharashtra, the state with the highest number of deaths, also has high CFR of 2.56. Sikkim has the third-highest CFR at 2.21.

Despite having a high number of cases, Kerala has a low CFR of 0.39. India’s overall case fatality rate is now 1.45.

In the last 24 hours, 8,55,157 Covid tests have been carried out across 1,193 government laboratories and 1,049 private laboratories.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 15,45,66,990 tests have been carried out.

Positivity rate

Despite the dip in the number of tests, the test positivity rate (TPR) remained low at 3.1 per cent. The overall TPR for India, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has further reduced to 6.3 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 30,695 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India. As many as 93,88,159 people in India have recovered from the infection since the beginning of the pandemic. India has the highest number of Covid recoveries in the world.

As many as 98,84,100 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. India has the second-largest number of coronavirus cases in the world, second only to the US.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra continues to have the highest number of active cases in the country, with 75,202 cases.

In the last 24 hours, 3,717 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the state.

This brings the state’s total to 18,80,416 cases. Of these, 48,209 people have died, with 70 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra has been reporting the highest number of daily deaths in the country.

Kerala has the second-highest number of active cases. In the last 24 hours, 4,698 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the state, which has brought the total number of cases to 6,69,330.

Meanwhile, active cases in the state declined to 59,588.

As many as 29 deaths were reported in the state in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total death toll of the state to 2,623.

West Bengal’s active caseload stood at 22,573 — the third-highest in the country. So far,  a total of 5,21,795 cases have been detected in the state, of which 9,057 people have died.

In the last 24 hours, the state reported 2,580 new cases and 47 deaths.

In Uttar Pradesh, 1,424 people tested positive for Covid-19 and 16 patients have died in the last 24 hours. The state’s active Covid case count, however, reduced to 19,729.

A total of 5,65,556 Covid-19 cases have been detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Chhattisgarh has seen a sustained increase in the number of Covid cases. On Monday, the state’s active case count increased to 19,070.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 2,57,020 people have been infected with Covid-19 in the state. Of these, 3,097 people have died of coronavirus.

In the last 24 hours, 1,259 people have tested positive for the disease while 13 people have lost their lives.
