India’s Covid death toll crosses 1.5 lakh, positivity rate drops to 1.9%

New Delhi: With 264 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the total Covid-19 fatalities in India crossed 1.5 lakh Wednesday. Meanwhile, active cases continued to decline, as the number of recoveries outnumbered the number of new infections.

India recorded 18,088 new cases in the last 24 hours, with most of the infections reported from the five states with the highest active case count.

The number of active cases in India reduced to 2,27,546. Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal are the states with the highest number of active cases as on Wednesday.

In the last 24 hours, 264 Covid-19 patients succumbed to the infection across the country, bringing the total fatalities in India to 1,50,114 since the beginning of the pandemic. Nearly a third of the total deaths have been reported from Maharashtra.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR), which is the highest in the country, has further increased to 3.22. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is now 2.55. Sikkim’s fatality rate is now 2.17. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.

The number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours increased to 9,31,408 across 1,202 government laboratories and 1,103 private laboratories.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 17,74,63,405 tests have been carried out in India.

The test positivity rate reduced to 1.9 per cent Wednesday. The overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.8 per cent.

As many as 21,314 people have recovered from Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours. This brought the number of recoveries, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 99,97,272.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, as many as 1,03,74,932 people have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

States with the highest active cases

In Kerala, 5,614 people tested positive in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected in the state so far to 7,84,488. Active cases in the state went up to 63,993. With 24 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll went up to 3,184.

Maharashtra also saw a rise in its active case count to 50,223 Wednesday. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 3,160 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state to 19,50,171.

In the last 24 hours, the state reported 64 Covid-19 deaths, which brought the state’s total death toll to 49,759, since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Uttar Pradesh, 729 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which brought the total number of cases from the state to 5,89,611.

The number of active cases in the state is now 12,286, while 8,433 people have succumbed to the infection since the beginning of the pandemic. As many as 20 deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours.

The active case count in Karnataka dropped to 9,656 in the last 24 hours. With 815 new Covid-19 infections reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of cases from the state now stands at 9,23,353.

Of these, a total of 12,118 people have died in the state, with eight deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

West Bengal reported 812 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state to 5,56,384. Of these, 9,293 cases are active, while 9,841 have died. In the last 24 hours, 24 deaths were reported from the state.
