CAA protest organiser Tabrez tests positive for COVID-19, being treated at LNJP Hospital

Jahangirpuri anti-CAA protest was one of many taking place across the national capital, and has now been called off. Tabrez says he visited it twice recently.

New Delhi: Tabrez Khan, one of the organisers of a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the capital’s Jahangirpuri area, has tested positive for COVID-19. Khan had undergone a test for the coronavirus Thursday. His sister had earlier tested positive after returning from Saudi Arabia.

“I got my test results Saturday evening, and I am currently undergoing treatment in quarantine,” Khan told ThePrint over the phone.

Khan is being treated at Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital. His sister returned from Saudi Arabia on 11 March, where she had gone for the Umrah pilgrimage. Khan met her two days later, on 13 March, and Khan subsequently developed a mild cough too.

Khan had earlier told ThePrint that he had visited the protest site in Jahangirpuri “a couple of times” after meeting his sister. The protest has now been called off.

Appeals to call off protests

Actor Swara Bhasker was among the many to appeal to anti-CAA protesters to call off their protests in the wake of the coronavirus threat.

“My appeal to the amazing Dadis of Shaheen Baugh and all the feisty women and people of the sit-in protests across the country: Stand Up! Self isolate! Vacate the streets!  I say this as an ally!” Bhasker wrote along with a video message she posted on Instagram.

The biggest of the anti-CAA protests, at Shaheen Bagh, continued in symbolic fashion Sunday.
