New Delhi: Forty-three per cent residents in the National Capital Region (NCR) and 45 per cent in the national capital said they know of one person or more in the family or local social network who have had dengue in 2021, a new survey has revealed.

The survey was conducted by community platform LocalCircles in light of the increase in dengue cases across Delhi-NCR, and revealed the extent to which the disease has impacted families.

LocalCircles also cited findings from hospitals such as Apollo and Max which stated that the number of dengue cases in the past month has spiked by 30-60 per cent.

Ghaziabad hardest hit, Gurugram least affected

The primary question the survey asked residents was if they knew anyone within their family or local social network who has dengue.

In Delhi, 52 per cent of respondents and 53 per cent in Delhi-NCR said they did not know anyone impacted by dengue this year.

However, 19 per cent of Delhi-NCR residents reported that they knew “2-3 individuals” in their family or social network who had been impacted by the disease.

Similarly, 16 per cent of Delhi residents and 15 per cent of Delhi-NCR residents said they knew a single individual impacted, while 10 per cent of Delhi residents knew four individuals impacted.

The survey also showed a city-by-city breakdown of the impact of dengue, in which Ghaziabad appeared to be the hardest hit while Gurugram was the least affected.

“It was found that 57 per cent residents of Ghaziabad know someone who has been impacted by dengue this year, followed by Delhi with 45 per cent, Noida with 44 per cent, Faridabad with 40 per cent, and 29 per cent in Gurugram,” the survey said.

“Doctors were also reported saying that the dengue season would usually end by October. However, the delayed monsoon departure also contributed to the surge in cases. According to  media reports, there has been a 60 per cent increase in cases in October over September,” the survey added.

The survey received 14,974 responses from Delhi-NCR residents located in every district of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. While 62 per cent of the respondents were men, 37 per cent were women.
