Files not found in safe room at UGC headquarters; they contained applications of four proposed institutes.

New Delhi: Files of four proposals, seeking the ‘Institute of Eminence (IoE)’ tag under the greenfield category, have gone missing from a safe room at the University Grants Commission (UGC) headquarters in New Delhi.

The greenfield category — meant for institutions that are yet to be established — is the one under which Jio Institute, proposed by Reliance Foundation, was declared as an IoE by the Modi government, triggering a controversy.

The missing files contained applications submitted by the Satya Bharti Foundation linked to Bharti Airtel Ltd, the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, the Maharashtra Institute of Tech, Pune, and the Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar.

That the files had gone missing was discovered when ThePrint sought to inspect them under the Right to Information Act.

The four were among eleven applicants, including Jio, which had applied for the coveted IoE tag under the greenfield category. The documents were kept in the safe room after the empowered committee picked six names for the IoE tag from the proposals that came to the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

While files of all other applicants were available for inspection, these four files were nowhere to be found in the safe room or elsewhere in the UGC building. The officers in-charge of safe-keeping of the files also had no idea where they were.

“All the files related to IoEs were kept in one room in the UGC (building) after they were cleared by the empowered committee,” said an UGC official working in the section responsible for the files.

“The nodal officer in charge of the files is on childcare leave and it is only after her arrival that we will be able to give you further information on the files. However, none of those present in the office currently have any idea about the files.”

The Modi government had last month conferred the IoE tag on three public — IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore — and three private institutes, BITS Pilani, Manipal University and the proposed Jio University.

The selected government institutions will get funding and greater autonomy while the private ones can enjoy greater autonomy.

  1. This IoE ,Institute of Eminence is nothing but another scam like Raffel or so.This is the new kind of corruption ,promoted by innovative crony capitalism by our smart Government.Aim is to distribute huge grants to most favoured cronies. Why no IoE for South Indian States.North India snatches every possible grants and funds by Central Government.Next PM should be from South India, only if then South India gets their due in new Central Projects.

  2. Why not delayed the announcement. In our country if FIR done action may happen but if police not interested in writing FIR then there is no rule to panish him. So every rules are only onesided.

  3. Nexus is open once again, this is real anti national activity, UGC stands for Universal Ground of Corruption. a cess pool of Unacademic undeclared Criminals. All is happening with the aid ana abate by the Govt

  4. सैंया भए कोतवाल अब डर काहे का Who can dare to question. Who will inquire. What will be the result if inquiry made. Like all other inquiries this will also be inconclusive. God save this country.

  5. Details should be given, like when u send the enquiry and what reply u got etc to believe ur story.Otherwise it will be construed as a made up story since it is a known fact that u have a soft corner for Congress.

  6. Obviously when the institution itself does not exist, the name of Jio institute was selected.. then why is it wrong to show their face… Who actually selected and sanctioned such crappy selection where other major and most eligible institutes where turned down.

  7. There is an umbilical chord of ambanis to powers that be starting with senior d ambani who became overnight a hero of masses though he used every loophole in town. Now corporate goons in his elder and younger son who are using modi. The elder one used modi for jio with full page advt, deals costing bsnl etc. Now the younger ambani who is totally bankrupt has been made middleman by none other than modi to work in rafaele at cost of hal. A college which does not exist gets institute of eminence and a company that existed for 10 days gets largest defense deal. Our country has no hopes wigh every politician be it congress, bjp or aap. Better to have military rule and lock up ambanis and get the taxes sucked up by them from public exchequer.

  8. Is this a agenda driven story. First indicator – photo of Modi with Ambani. There is nothing in the story indicating they are involved.
