Mumbai, Sep 21 (PTI) A small-time actor has been arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman in Santacruz area after falling into financial distress, an official said on Monday.
The stolen gold chain has been recovered from the accused, identified as Ashish Attarchand Sharma, a resident of Santacruz (East).
A Vakola Police official said a formal complaint was lodged after an unidentified individual snatched a gold chain from the neck of the complainant’s mother inside their residence on Sunday.
“As the crime scene was located inside a congested chawl locality with no CCTV coverage or eyewitnesses, police faced initial hurdles.
“However, acting on a physical description provided by the complainant, investigators scanned CCTV footage from surrounding lanes and spotted a suspect moving suspiciously in a disguise near the area around the time of the incident,” said sub-inspector Sushantkumar Patil.
After obtaining a frame grab of the suspect, officers circulated his photo among local intelligence sources. Based on precise information provided by informants, a police team raided Shyam Sundar Chawl and apprehended Sharma.
His interrogation revealed that he started committing the theft due to ongoing financial troubles, the official said, adding that further investigation is underway.
