New Delhi: Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane-starrer Sanam Teri Kasam is proving to be second-time lucky with the film having already grossed nearly Rs 16 crore after its re-release on 7 February. It has left behind Loveyapa, Himesh Reshamiya’s Badass Ravikumar and even Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which was also rereleased in February.
Originally released in 2016, the romantic drama was a commercial failure, earning a lifetime total of Rs 8 crore. As per reports, the film was made on a budget of Rs 25 crore.
According to Sacnilk, on Friday, the film collected Rs 4.25 crore, that is, three times more than its original opening day collection. On the second day, the film saw a jump of around 15 per cent, earning approximately Rs 5.25 crore. It added another Rs 6 crore on Sunday, making its total opening weekend collection Rs 15.50 crore, which is approximately 170 per cent higher than its original collection.
Second-time success
On 23 January, Harshvardhan Rane dropped the poster of the film on Instagram, urging the audience to tag producer Deepak Mukut and request him to re-release the film on 7 February. The post, so far, has 2.2 million likes and over 40 thousand comments.
Days later, the actor visited the producer’s house with a bunch of fans and shouted at the top of his voice: “Pakka yeh log promise kar rahe hai dekhenge is baar, Deepak sir neeche aaiye. (they are promising to watch the film this time. Please come down) please re-release the film.”
Sanam Teri Kasam’s renewed success is part of Bollywood’s new trend, where movies that underperformed in their initial release get to have a second inning at the box office.
Films like Laila Majnu (2018) and Tumbbad (2018) have also gained traction upon their re-release.
Badass Ravikumar collected Rs 2.45 crore on Friday and Rs 2 crore on Saturday. On Sunday, it added another Rs 1.40 crore to its weekend collection, which took the total to Rs 6.15 crore.
Advait Chandan’s directorial Loveyapa though remained steady, its box office collection was far behind Badass Ravikumar.
The film minted Rs 1.15 crore at the box office on Friday, followed by Rs 1.65 crore on Saturday as well as Sunday, taking its domestic total to Rs 4.45 crore.
Hollywood film Interstellar, much like Sanam Teri Kasam, enjoyed a strong opening weekend during its re-release in India.
The Christopher Nolan-directed sci-fi collected Rs 8.9 crore in three days, but it couldn’t match Sanam Teri Kasam‘s comeback craze.
