Indians have taken on the Dhurandhar spy trend. They’re killing it one meme at a time

While the ‘spies’ initially seem to fit in, their ingrained ‘Indian’ habits like asking for a QR code or refusing non-vegetarian food on Tuesdays blows their cover.

New Delhi: Two weeks after its release, Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar has become a source of hilarious spy memes. Influencers are showing how ‘day one of being an Indian spy in Pakistan’ would go—they’re unable to shake their ‘Indian-ness’. The Ranveer Singh action entertainer has now grossed Rs 600 crore worldwide.

A mainstay of the reels are a kurta set, kohl-rimmed eyes and vocabulary dominated by “bhaijaan.” It’s the Indian vision of a Pakistani.

In influencer Yuvraj Dua’s take on the trend, his cover is blown when he is asked to plan a party for ‘bade sahab’. He instinctively says, “Gurgaon se daaru le aata hu, aur chakna toh bli… (blinkit)… (will get alcohol from Gurgaon and the snacks can be ordered from blinkit)….”

While the ‘spies’ initially seem to fit in, their small, ingrained ‘Indian’ habits like, asking for a QR code, refusing non-vegetarian food on Tuesdays, refusing rice on Ekadashi, saying ‘hari om’ or touching feet, blows their cover. These videos have touched views in millions.

Dhurandhar has been generating buzz ever since its release on 5 December. From controversies around its politics to Akshaye Khanna’s entry and even the Bahraini song FA9LA, the film has stayed in the headlines. This new meme trend is another addition to the list.

Naren, an X influencer followed by PM Modi, also jumped on the trend. His ‘failure’ cam when he was asked about 6 December— ‘Abhi Kashi Mathura baaki hain [Kashi, Mathura next]’

Influencer duo, Dhruv and Shyam, have created one of the most-viewed reels under this trend.

The moment Dhruv is introduced to Rehman Dakait, his act slips. Even though he greeted him with a confident “assalam walaikum,” he instinctively bends down to touch his feet, giving himself away.

Sanskar hi aise diye hai gharwalo ne kya karu (What can I do, my family has raised me with strong manners),” he captioned the post, which has over 42 million views on Instagram.

“Tu R.A.W nhi, raw agent hai,” a user commented.

Number one cricketer

Mahesh Keshwala’s undoing comes when asked to name his favourite cricketer. After taking a pause, he says Babar Azam. But his cover is still blown. The ‘Pakistani’ questioning him says that Virat Kohli is the number one cricketer there too.

Arun Singh pointed to another habit, where he touches the feet of a monkey poster. This habit was also seen in Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The video is sitting at 2 million views.

The women weren’t far behind either. Influencers like Ankita Sahigal, Saloni Gaur and Pari Dua leaned into their everyday habits.

While Gaur showcased the familiar reflex of kissing papers after they slip from her hand, a behaviour many Indians grow up with, Sahigal’s refusal to eat rice on Ekadashi blows her cover.

Shipra Singh’s day one was going well until she joined her hands while responding with a ‘walekum asalam’. Pari Dua gets caught when she starts comparing Lyari’s air to Delhi’s.

There was also another take on the meme. One X user said their first day as spy would be spent “aggressively patrolling outside Fawad Khan’s house”.
