New Delhi: The 2025 Met Gala might have had Indians in a chokehold, as three popular celebrities walked the blue carpet for the very first time. While Shah Rukh Khan’s appearance was the most anticipated, Indian fans also kept their eyes trained for singer Diljit Dosanjh and actor Kiara Advani. The Met Gala, which starts at 3:30 am India time, had the country’s fashion enthusiasts take notes and share their thoughts on the appearances of the Indian celebrities.

Dosanjh, much like his 2023 Coachella appearance, stuck to his Punjabi roots in his debut walk on the blue carpet of the gala. He owned his aura and looked like a Sikh King for the biggest fashion night of the year. Dosanjh’s outfit was designed by Prabal Gurung, who had also designed actor Deepika Padukone’s debut red ensemble at the event in 2017.

Dosanjh looked every bit royal in a white turban and matching ensemble, accessorised with jewellery. His long white cape, inscribed with Punjabi alphabets, and the sword in his hand completed the look.

Fans gushed over his look, and even stylists were impressed. “Finally, we got a winner,” wrote celebrity stylist Bhawna Sharma. People did not even care if Dosanjh’s look in fact followed the Met Gala theme of ‘Tailored For You’. “Idc if it’s on theme or not but that’s how you do MET,” wrote one fan.

Some called it a desi take on the idea of tailored, and Dosanjh, as per Gen Z lingo, ‘ate’. “WINNER!!! understood the assignment as always,” wrote one social media user.

Fans were divided over Advani’s choice as the soon-to-be mother made her Met Gala debut in custom Gaurav Gupta. Her look featured a gold, heart-shaped breastplate with an attached umbilical cord linking to a smaller heart—an ode to her pregnancy.

“Who would have thought that a pregnant Kiara would create the pop culture moment for Bollywood at MET?” wrote a fan of the actor. Another wrote, “Rihanna 2.0 with the baby bump.”

Others were disappointed with the ‘copied’ look, and compared it to how Aishwarya Rai for Cannes 2024 and Alia Bhatt dressed for her Paris Fashion Week debut last year.

“Meh. Breast plate for the Met.. groundbreaking. Much ado about nothing,” wrote a user, for the overuse of the quirky body of the costume.

Mother Priyanka

This may have been Priyanka Chopra’s fifth Met Gala appearance—starting with her internet-breaking trench coat dress in 2017—but she still served.  Accompanied by her husband Nick Jonas, the actor turned up in custom Balmain in white-and-black polka dots.

The halter-neck gown was cinched at the waist and extended into a crisp, flowing train, paired with a matching polka-dot blazer and an oversized black hat.

“Polka dots are officially back, and she just put a stamp on it!” wrote a fan, highlighting the actor’s flawless take on the Met Gala theme. Another fan wrote, “Mother Priyanka never disappoints.”

Another fan likened her outfit to the character of Cruella De Vil from the Walt Disney animated film, 101 Dalmatians

But her outfit’s thunder might have been stolen by Nick Jonas’ best husband behaviour. “Love her and that gallant husband of hers always so attentive sigh” wrote a fan, noting how Jonas is a consistent cheerleader to the actor, since their first-time Met appearance in 2017.

Vintage jewels, African textiles

The two other Indians turning heads at the event were businesswoman Isha Ambani and tech entrepreneur Mona Patel.

Making an unforgettable entrance, Patel walked the carpet in a sharply tailored black ensemble by Thom Browne. But what truly had everyone talking was the robotic dog Vector that was her accessory. Social media users agreed that Patel nailed the theme with her look.

“Absolutely understood the assignment. She nailed the tailored style,” read one comment.

Ambani chose to wear her mother’s vintage jewels to the event, which had everyone talking. Her outfit was designed by Anamika Khanna and featured a tailored jacket with crisp collar, combined with a finely embroidered waistcoat—inspired by African textiles and global craftsmanship.

Many lauded Anaita Shroff Adajania’s styling for Ambani’s look. “Beautiful. No notes. 11/10 Mother Anaita Shroff Adajania has served us again,” wrote a fashion commentator. Another summed up the look with a simple statement— “That’s how you show up to the Met gala.”
