New Delhi: Protests broke out Tuesday near the Bangladesh High Commission in a high-security area of Delhi, with about 150-250 Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal supporters chanting anti-Bangladesh slogans and carrying anti-Yunus placards. They were protesting the brutal killing of a young Bangladeshi Hindu, Deepu Chandra Das.

Reacting to the protests, the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, and issued a statement expressing concern over the security of the mission in Delhi, asking for diplomatic protocol on safety of diplomats to be followed.

“Bangladesh condemns such acts of premeditated violence or intimidation against diplomatic establishments, which not only endanger the safety of diplomatic personnel but also undermine the principles of mutual respect and values of peace and tolerance,” the statement read.

Significantly, the protests were held some distance from the high commission—in the diplomatic enclave in Chanakyapuri.

But the mission has suspended operations for now. Visa operations, handled by a private agency, are also suspended.

There was another protest on Saturday, when 20-25 people had gathered outside the high commission. Reacting to Bangladesh media reports on the protests, India had issued a statement: “We have noted misleading propaganda in sections of the Bangladesh media on the incident. The fact is that about 20-25 youth gathered in front of the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on 20 December and raised slogans in protest against the horrendous killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, while also calling for the protection of all minorities in Bangladesh. There was no attempt to breach the fence or create a security situation at any time. The police stationed at the spot dispersed the group after a few minutes.”

On Monday, VHP supporters had allegedly carried out vandalism at the Bangladesh visa centre in Siliguri in north Bengal.
