New Delhi: The world today needs governments which are inclusive, clean and free from corruption, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Dubai Wednesday, ahead of the general election in which the ruling BJP-led coalition will seek a third term in power.
Addressing the World Government Summit during his ongoing two-day trip to the UAE, Modi said people’s trust in the Indian government has increased over the past few years. “People now have trust in the intent and commitment of the Indian government. This was possible only because we prioritised public sentiment in governance. We are empathetic towards the needs and dreams of citizens, and are resolved to fulfilling them,” he added. He also emphasised the role of technology in governance, which he said makes the process smart and transparent.
The Prime Minister said that social and financial inclusion had been his government’s priority, underscoring how over 50 crore people were now connected to the banking system. “This has taken India forward in areas of fintech and digital payments.”
He further said: “We have focused on women-led development. We are strengthening the financial, social and political conditions of Indian women. We have also given reservation to women in Parliament. We are also creating new opportunities for youth and focusing on their skill development. Soon, India will have the third-biggest startup ecosystem.”
He added that “minimum government, maximum governance” has been his government’s mantra throughout.
Modi called for reforms in the global governance institutions at “a time when we are transforming our country”, adding that countries now have to promote values of a “cohesive, cooperative, and collaborative world”. He urged the increased participation of the Global South in international decision-making.
“Keeping international problems in mind, we have to give direction to our countries, and plan for the future… People have to listen to the voice of the Global South. We must also share our resources and capabilities with those in need,” Modi said, adding, “We will have to create global prototypes for emerging challenges like artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and cybercrime. We will have to give priority to our national sovereignty and also keep the dignity of international law.”
He also said that India was forging ahead as a “friend of the world”.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the leadership of his “brother”, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, describing him as a leader with vision, resolve and commitment. He lauded Bin Zayed for playing a big role in bringing the world’s thought leaders on one platform, that of the World Government Summit.
“It is a big thing that Dubai has become the epicentre of global economy, commerce and technology,” Modi said.
Modi’s visit to the UAE is his seventh since 2014. During his two-day visit, he will discuss wide-ranging issues with top leaders of the UAE to further strengthen bilateral ties. Another highlight of his visit is the inauguration later Wednesday of BAPS Mandir, the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi.
