‘Each time there’s violence…’: India slams Pakistan’s ‘frivolous claim’ of role in Balochistan unrest

New Delhi: Islamabad is “parroting frivolous claims”, India has said, slamming Pakistan’s claims of its involvement in the latest series of suicide bombings and gun attacks in Balochistan, killing at least 92, including civilian and military personnel.

MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has observed in a press release, “We categorically reject the baseless allegations made by Pakistan, which are nothing but its usual tactics to deflect attention from its own internal failings.”

“Instead of parroting frivolous claims each time there is a violent incident, it would do better to focus on addressing long-standing demands of its people in the region. Its record of suppression, brutality, and violation of human rights is well known,” he has added.

Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack that began on 31 January in the northwestern province of Pakistan.

A video released by BLA showed a woman militant—a move to highlight the role of women in Balochistan’s “liberation struggle”.

Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR), the Pakistani military’s media wing, has said in its statement that the attack was carried out with India’s support in an attempt to seize control of a city or strategic installation.

The statement has added, “Intelligence reports have unequivocally confirmed that the attacks were orchestrated and directed by terrorist ringleaders operating from outside Pakistan, who were in direct communication with the terrorists throughout the incident.”

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has also said that the attackers had India’s backing. The attack had begun almost simultaneously across Balochistan, including Quetta, Mastung, Noshki, Dalbandin, Kharan, Panjgur, Tump, Gwadar, and Pasni.

Earlier this week, the Pakistani Army launched a raid against the BLA in two of their military hideouts, killing 41 militants. The day before the coordinated attacks, the military had publicly announced the successful raids and killings.

Chief Minister of Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti has claimed that security forces killed roughly 700 militants last year.

Balochistan has long been the site of insurgency and separatist activities due to prolonged distrust between the government in Islamabad and Balochistan. Even though the province is the most resource-rich region, it has suffered from political marginalisation, heavy security presence, and human rights abuses.
