The commentors on this article seem to forget that Northeast people have been regularly hounded in the mainland for their looks, eating habits and religion. Northeast fares far better than the Bimaru states on all HDI parameters even though they are among the least funded states. The reporter is spot on in his assessment. Christian communalism combined with xenophobia against non-tribals is the reason BJP did not do well in north-east India. Having lived for over 15 years in various states of north-east India I can vouch for the fact that the various tribes inhabiting the region have an utterly xenophobic attitude towards the resident non-tribals. What is ironic is that they want equality, respect and dignity while they are in mainland India but deny the very same to the non-tribal residents in their own state.
The non-tribal lives in constant fear of violence and intimidation. They are routinely harassed and hounded. For example, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) routinely unleashes violence targeting the non-tribals in Meghalaya.
Mr. Roy Barman, these Christian majority states, for whom your heart so bleeds, are nothing but basketcases. Ever since Independence, all these Christian majority states have done is to beg and borrow from Delhi while giving nothing back at all. These states are absolute laggards with hardly any contribution at all to the national GDP.
What is even worse is the extreme xenophobia prevalent amongst these tribal states. Mainland Indians are the target of violence and intimidation almost on a daily basis. Abusing the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, the natives of these Christian majority states harrass and hound the non-tribal population.
Kindly be honest enough to report the truth about these states.
