KLIP Targets India’s Mobile-First Viewers With Short-Format Storytelling

India’s digital video consumption is increasingly being shaped outside metro cities, with mobile-first users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets driving the next phase of growth. As viewing shifts to shorter, more frequent sessions, the way content is structured is beginning to change alongside it, with retention emerging as a more meaningful measure than reach.

For a large segment of these users, entertainment is consumed in brief windows, during commutes, between tasks, or in short breaks throughout the day. This creates a gap in the current ecosystem. Long-form OTT platforms are built around extended viewing, while short-form video platforms prioritise volume and speed. Neither fully aligns with how these audiences engage with content in practice, where holding attention consistently remains a challenge.

KLIP, a micro drama platform in India, is positioning itself within this gap with a content-first approach. Founded by Vicky Bahri and Harman Baweja, both of whom bring decades of experience across Bollywood, film production and long-form storytelling, the platform is built around narrative discipline rather than content volume. Their background in scripting and production informs how stories are structured, even within short formats. Co-founder Dev Gupta complements this with a focus on marketing and distribution, using performance data and audience insights to drive targeted growth and user retention, with an emphasis on acquiring high-intent users rather than maximising installs.

The platform’s core format reflects this thinking. Episodes are designed to be short enough for mobile-first consumption, while still contributing to a larger narrative arc. Each instalment moves a story forward, creating continuity and encouraging repeat viewing. This structured approach is aimed not just at fitting into shorter time windows, but at giving users a reason to return, differentiating it from feed-based short-form content where clips are often consumed in isolation.

KLIP is also focusing on original Indian stories, rather than relying heavily on adapted formats. The content is rooted in culturally familiar contexts, aimed at audiences across regions who are increasingly seeking stories that reflect their own environments. This emphasis on originality and relevance supports deeper engagement and repeat consumption.

Beyond content, the company is aligning distribution with scale. Partnerships and platform integrations are being used to extend reach beyond app stores, particularly across mobile-first ecosystems. This approach reflects an understanding that access and discovery vary significantly across India’s diverse user base, but that long-term value lies in converting reach into consistent usage.

Early traction points to growing adoption, with over 250,000 downloads within weeks of launch and a steadily expanding active user base. For a category still taking shape in India, the ability to convert installs into repeat viewers may determine which platforms scale sustainably.

As the India streaming market continues to evolve, growth is likely to come from audiences outside traditional metros. Platforms that can match their viewing habits of short, frequent and mobile-led, while also building retention are expected to be better positioned.

KLIP’s model sits at that intersection, combining short-format accessibility with storytelling structure, reflecting a broader shift in how content is being built for India’s next wave of viewers, where the focus is not just on attracting users, but on bringing them back.
