Chennai vs Coimbatore: Where does Silver cost less?

Date:

Share post:

Tamil Nadu is one of the busiest silver markets in India. Silver trades in large quantities daily between the jewellery corridors of Chennai and the industrial trading floors of Coimbatore, the hub of the textile industry. The high consumption of silver in both cities often raises the question of where it is cheaper to buy silver between Chennai and Coimbatore.

However, it’s not as simple as just comparing prices. In this blog, we will explore where silver is cheaper between the two cities and the reasons behind it to help buyers make informed choices in either city.

How is the base rate determined?

No separate base price of silver is fixed by Chennai and Coimbatore. The major factors that influence the benchmark rate of silver in India are the international benchmarks such as the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and COMEX.

It is then mirrored domestically on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), the biggest commodity derivatives exchange in India, where silver is traded as a standardised futures contract. It provides silver contracts of different sizes to satisfy the demand of various types of market participants.

MCX offers silver contracts in various sizes to meet the demand of different types of market participants. Every city’s local silver rate is derived from this MCX rate. The two cities, Chennai and Coimbatore, are in the same state and follow the same GST regime of 3% on silver jewellery, coins, bars and utensils as in all parts of India and 5% on making charges. The starting point is, therefore, largely the same for both cities.

The daily price gap

On most trading days, the two cities have almost identical silver prices. Silver prices in Coimbatore closely track the Chennai silver rate with minor local variation. A comparison of the Silver price in Chennai today with the price of Silver in Coimbatore over the last month reveals that the price difference is often negligible between silver prices in both cities.

The bullion associations in both cities update their silver prices in accordance with MCX silver prices to determine the daily silver rate for local jewellers. Ultimately, the spot silver price acts as a level playing field before any local showroom markups are even applied.

The most important verification

Regardless of which city the investors buy silver in, they should check the BIS hallmark on purchased silver items before buying to confirm its authenticity. The Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark issues various purity markings like 999, 925, or 900 with a HUID code, which is the only official certification of silver purity in India.

For example, a buyer who receives 999 hallmarked silver in Chennai at ₹250 per gram is better served than one who saves ₹15 in any city but receives improperly marked silver. Therefore, purity verification is also important along with the price comparison.

When to buy silver in both cities

The demand pattern is similar for both Chennai and Coimbatore. The local premiums are highest during Dhanteras, Diwali and the Tamil wedding season. Generally, the best time to purchase is during less busy periods.

This seasonal dynamic matters more than the city-to-city base rate gap, allowing buyers to purchase silver at a much lower cost if it is not needed urgently.

The bottom line

The silver rates in Chennai and Coimbatore are identical on most trading days, as both cities’ silver prices are priced off the same national MCX benchmark and they are in the same state. The real difference lies in making charges, jeweller competition, and the nature of the purchase.

Therefore, before buying silver in both cities, buyers should compare making charges and verify BIS hallmarks through the official portal, as these deliver more value than city-shopping alone.
