There is gross exaggeration in the article. I have been in recruitment for the past 15 years and the author is being liberal with the truth in claiming a recruiter asked for a candidate’s caste. No one does that.
“When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure” – simplified statement of Goodhart’s research paper by Marilyn Strathern.
The author has made the same mistake. Target is to have a caste-free society by enabling suppressed castes and measure of it’s achievement is number of lower-castes’ in higher education/position. We seem to think that just by putting lower caste students in IITs, we have done our job.
It is incorrect to say that suicides occur only because of harassment and study pressure does not play any part. Instead of enabling Dalits by providing good basic education and financial/emotional support to take up higher challenges, we give them crutches of reservation in higher education. With weak base, the top collapses.
Reservation ALONE isn’t a fix for “Annihilation of cast” as well. Vote bank driven reservation policy is not eradicating caste, it is making the caste firmer. It needs to be revised – not removed.
