Outrage over the Kolkata rape-and-murder case is justified and spontaneous. Blaming it on politicisation is convenient but unwise. CM Mamata Banerjee must engage with protestors and restore the credibility of government. There were lapses in how it responded to the terrible crime. Only acknowledging these first can help restore calm.

Seems like Mr. Shekhar Gupta finally got the permission from “The High Command” to publish an editorial critical of Ms. Mamata Banerjee and her government.
Even a cursory glance at The Print’s coverage of Bengal will make it obvious that Mr. Gupta is an ardent admirer of Ms. Mamata Banerjee and her brand of politics.
It’s sad that the editorial was published two weeks after the terrible crime occurred. For so long Mr. Gupta kept dilly-dallying and even worse, tried to blame the BJP in one of his earlier editorials by bringing in Mr. Ram Rahim’s parole issue.
CM Mamata Banerjee can draw on a lifetime’s experience of politics. Very difficult now to retrieve the situation, avoid serious political damage.
