Face-to-face for the first time, Joe Biden and Xi Jinping agreed to ensure heated strategic competition doesn’t escalate. Xi had escalated tensions, gambling America’s leadership would be too weak to confront him. Biden’s mid-term victories, though, put paid to that plan. Agreement on Taiwan is unlikely—but so is war.

Minister with misogynistic mindset continuing in Mamata cabinet a disgrace

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s apology to President Droupadi Murmu for minister Akhil Giri’s disparaging comment on her appearance is in order. But her condemnation isn’t enough. A minister with misogynistic mindset continuing in her Cabinet is a disgrace. Banerjee should take exemplary action, not wait for a repeat offence.
