PM Modi has promised more structural reforms and support to the private sector hit by the Covid crisis. It’s reassuring but the government’s intent shouldn’t be limited to words. It must act at lightning speed. Old ways of incrementalism won’t work to boost manufacturing sector and bring back the jobs.

The controversy over delisting 1,026 products at CAPF canteens in the name of swadeshi highlights the danger of political slogans being mistaken for policy. A pandemic-hit economy cannot be guided by political adventurism. Self-reliance is a noble goal but it cannot become the foundation for inward-looking and protectionist economic policies.
