Terrorist activity high in Pir Panjal mountains poses a big challenge: infiltrators with advanced tech, training and weaponry. Modi cabinet’s ambitious push for One-Nation-One-Election is merely rhetorical. BJP knows it doesn’t have the numbers in parliament to bring the necessary amendments to the Constitution. It could, however, have demonstrated its seriousness by clubbing elections in the four states instead of holding them separately as it is doing now.

  1. Especially true for Maharashtra, where the gap is a few weeks. Elections to municipal corporations pending for upto four years. 2. ONOE as a political project rests on the assumption of an electoral tsunami sweeping all in its path. May have been true in 2014 and 2019, not in 2024. Even then, the South and East were largely insulated. Now more likely a reversion to the general election being a sum of states affair.
