It’s unfortunate that a world-class biotech company like Bharat Biotech was dragged into a politicised controversy by regulatory haste and lack of transparency. Founder Krishna Ella did well to clear the air on his Covaxin now. This company isn’t just a vaccine producer, but also a developer of global repute.

71% judges took up post-retirement govt jobs since 1999. Soul-searching by judiciary needed

ThePrint analysis of SC judges who retired since 1999 reveals 71% took up assignments after demitting office, many involving government appointments. This raises questions about conflict of interest and can cast a shadow on judgments. This calls for a reasonable cooling-off period for such appointments and some soul-searching by judges.

Covid vaccination needs coordination. Not just govt, pvt sector & community leaders also responsible

Coronavirus vaccination will be the biggest effort in the history of mankind, and will need a coordinated push. Not just the government, but it’s also the responsibility of private sector and community leaders. Offer of free, universal vaccines is generous, but those who can afford must be allowed to pay.

  1. Shame on politicians who are by opposing vaccine as some conspiracy are pandering to their “SECULAR VOTE” bank POLITICS.

If certain community is opposing covid19 vaccination due to regressive religious beliefs than it is incumbent upon politicians who are the beneficiaries of their votes to educate and encourage them to take the vaccine and save their lives .

  2. I am surprised and disappointed at The Print’s stand on the Bharat biotech vaccine, Clearly lot of red flags inthis case from ICMR, a defacto regulator partnering with a manufacturer, unjustified deadlines in August now an approval sans data.Reputable companies also manipulate rules .The safety and trust of the public is far more important than the profitability or reputation of the company.I used to the print was for independent news coverage, clearly that’s not the case. The reportage on this issue is obviously compromised

  3. Perhaps Bharat Biotech could have been a little more patient. Allowed Phase 3 tests to proceed further, generated data that could be reviewed by the scientific community. Not in the league of Y 2 K which brought India’s IT industry to the world’s attention but the pandemic provides an opportunity to the pharmaceutical industry to come to favourable notice worldwide.

  4. Some posts, like Chairman NHRC, are best filled in by retired Judges. There are also various appellate bodies where their lifetime of legal / judicial knowledge and experience equip them better than others. However, as a recent column by Advocate Dushyant laments, the higher judiciary is now not always measuring up to the aura that it has built up in the past. The reasons are complex, may not necessarily be linked to the temptation of securing a post retirement job. In recent times, Shri Ranjan Gogoi, MP has trodden an unfamiliar path.

    • If the retired Judges are good for certain positions, such as Chairman of NHRC, thn why aren’t thy kept in the court they were after their retirement by giving them an extension? They were the best in the positions they were, i. e. their positions in the courts. 2. NO RETIRED JUDGES ACCEPT, OR ARE OFFERED “RETIREMENT” POSITIONS. Why should it be different in India?

  5. There have been some ambivalent statements over free vaccine. Quite unlike the forthright promises made to the voters of Bihar and Hyderabad. SII will be selling doses of the OUAZ vaccine to the government at Rs 200 each, $ 3. Not having provided any worthwhile fiscal support or relief to businesses and households, the government is morally bound to inoculate all Indian citizens free of cost. That will also help in opening up the economy with more confidence. 2. The government’s programme should be complemented by a paid effort in the private sector. Using Pfizer and Moderna or other similar vaccines. 3. There is some disquiet over the approval of Covaxin for use on an emergency basis for trials. A world class company like Boeing went wrong with the Boeing Max 737. Utmost care should be taken.
