US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan Sunday affirmed US commitment to Israel’s security to his Israeli counterpart Tzachi Hanegbi, a White House press statement said.
The two countries discussed the upcoming Israel Memorial Day and strategies to defeat Hamas in Gaza amid concerns over a potential Rafah invasion.
Israel Memorial Day will commemorate the victims of the Hamas attacks for the first time, according to the press statement.
Sullivan raised President Biden’s concerns over a full-scale military ground operation into Rafah, where over one million Palestinians have taken shelter.
Hanegbi said Israel is taking such US concerns into account and would discuss alternative courses of action to ensure the defeat of Hamas in Gaza.
“Sullivan and Hanegbi then reviewed the substantive discussions to date of the Strategic Consultative Group. They agreed to establish another in-person meeting soon,” the press release stated.
