The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres Friday called for everyone to lay down their arms as the world unites in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

In his video message for the opening of the Games, Guterres said the aim of the event is to “build bridges,” foster solidarity, and achieve the ultimate goal of peace for all.

“The world gathers in Paris to celebrate the power of sport,” he said. “To bring hope. To transcend cultures. To unite people. To promote mutual respect and fair play.”

He added that the Olympic Truce is a powerful reminder of the importance of hope and peace.

“May the Olympic flame light the path to a world of peace and harmony,” he concluded.
