New Delhi: The commander of a nuclear submarine in the UK stepped down from the position after he was linked with a Labour MP whose husband was arrested on suspicion of helping China’s foreign intelligence, the Financial Times reported.
The captain, who remains in the Royal Navy, vacated his command citing “personal reasons”. He has not faced disciplinary action as he is not believed to have broken any military rules, FT said.
The investigation, launched approximately a year ago, examined whether the officer’s communication with Joani Reid, MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, had created a potential blackmail vulnerability.
People familiar with the matter told FT that “the probe was necessary from a due diligence perspective to examine any potential blackmail risk”.
During the inquiry, investigators found that the captain and Reid had exchanged “flirtatious messages”, sources quoted by FT said, adding that the two did not have a physical relationship and were not in contact since September 2025.
The China connection
The issue came under scrutiny after Reid’s husband, David Taylor, was arrested on 4 March alongside two men connected to the Labour Party. Counter-terror police detained them under the National Security Act on suspicion that Taylor had assisted China’s foreign intelligence service through third-party lobbying. Taylor is listed as a family member in the UK’s parliamentary register.
UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis said “the police’s investigation relates to foreign the interference, which is intended to target the UK’s democracy”.
The MoD subsequently conducted fresh security checks. Officials told FT they were confident no breach of security had occurred.
The geographic dimension sharpens the concern: Reid’s constituency lies roughly 50km from the Clyde naval base, home to Britain’s strategic nuclear deterrent—the Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, one of which was commanded by the captain.
After Taylor’s arrest, Reid released a statement defending her family: “I have never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law. I am not part of my husband’s business activities, and neither my children nor I are part of this investigation.”
She subsequently announced a voluntary suspension from the Labour Whip “till the internal investigations are concluded”.
The Royal Navy has sought to distance itself from the matter. A spokesperson told FT: “The security of the nuclear deterrent is our highest priority, and we have robust processes in place to protect the security of our people and capabilities. We will not comment on individual cases.”
