New Delhi: In a bid to decarbonise the aviation sector, the UK government has implemented a new mandate requiring airlines to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Effective Wednesday, all flights departing from the UK must contain a minimum of 2% SAF. This percentage will incrementally increase to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040, a government press release stated.

The mandate, hailed as ‘one of the world’s first’, is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry. SAF, typically derived from sustainable sources like household waste or used cooking oil, emits an average of 70% less carbon than traditional fossil-based jet fuel.

By spearheading this initiative, the UK aims to solidify its position as a leader in decarbonising air travel. The government estimates that by 2030, the mandate will require approximately 1.2 million tonnes of SAF annually, enough to fuel flights around the globe 3,000 times.

This move is aimed at creating thousands of skilled jobs across the UK, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to the nation’s goal of becoming a clean energy superpower.

Minister for Aviation, Mike Kane, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “From this moment on, aviation will be a greener, more sustainable form of travel and today marks a significant milestone for the UK SAF industry.” He further highlighted the mandate’s role in creating jobs and supporting the UK’s Plan for Change, which outlines a roadmap towards a more sustainable future.
