New Delhi: Secret Service officers shot a man near the White House after an “armed confrontation” early Sunday morning, the federal law enforcement agency said in a statement. The incident occurred around midnight at the intersection of 17th and F Street, NW, said the statement issued by Secret Service uniformed division chief Michael Buck.
US President Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident.
The statement added that authorities received prior information about a “suicidal individual who may be traveling to Washington DC from Indiana”. Around midnight, Secret Service personnel located a parked vehicle matching the description and spotted a man nearby.
As officers approached him, he allegedly drew a firearm, prompting an armed standoff during which Secret Service officers fired shots.

The man was transported to a local hospital, the statement said, adding that “his condition remains unknown”. It also said no Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.
The Secret Service also said the incident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia.
Chief of communications for the US Secret Service Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the shooting on microblogging site ‘X’, stating that Secret Service officers were involved in an armed encounter and that the Metropolitan Police Department would oversee the investigation. “Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW. A similar incident was reported in August 2020 when Trump, during his first term as President, had to be escorted out of a news conference after Secret Service agents shot and wounded a man who claimed to be armed outside the White House.
