Davos, May 23 (PTI) Pakistan minister Sherry Rehman on Monday made a strong pitch for democracy, saying only democracies speak to people and questions can be asked, as seen in the entire world.
Speaking at a session during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2022, she said, “Democracies speak to the vulnerable, oligarchy does not. Questions can be asked in a democracy. I have seen authoritarian regimes in my country and I can say that.” She further said it is a complex world, but we need to guard against the theory that messier problems can be solved easily in authoritarian regimes.
She said democracies should be the only way of life and of governance.
Rehman, however, said there could be different models of democracy for different countries and it should not be seen as something like ‘one size fits all’.
She also said the world should also understand that climate change is a major issue facing everyone and it must not be forgotten.
Rehman, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change, was speaking at a session on the ‘The future of democracy’, where panelists discussed that the consensus on democratic norms has shown signs of fraying in recent years, with increased polarization, disillusion and authoritarian patterns of governance, including in advanced Western democracies.
They also discussed how serious are the strains on democracy and what steps can be taken to reinvigorate democratic societies and institutions. PTI BJ DRR
