PORT LOUIS (Reuters) -Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has dismissed the central bank’s second deputy governor, a newspaper in the Indian Ocean island nation reported on Friday, citing government sources.
The decision to sack Gerard Sanspeur was reported by L’Express newspaper and follows local media reports of a rift between top officials at the Bank of Mauritius that alarmed Ramgoolam.
Ramgoolam told Le Défi Media Group on Wednesday that the standoff between central bank governor Rama Sithanen and Sanspeur – the number three official at the bank – was “unacceptable”.
Ramgoolam said he was “trying to move as quickly as possible” and hoped to resolve the issue by the end of the week.
Sanspeur announced on his Facebook page that he would hold a press conference at 3 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Friday.
Spokespeople at the central bank and the prime minister’s office declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.
