Biden congratulates Guatemala’s new president, discusses migration issues

The two leaders met at the Los Angeles Declaration for Protection and Migration Summit.

U.S. President Biden congratulated Bernardo Arévalo on his inauguration as Guatemala’s new president and discussed with him measures to address the root causes of migration from Central America.

In a statement, the Biden administration said that in a meeting at the Los Angeles Declaration for Protection and Migration Summit, the two leaders discussed “good governance, effective migration management, the importance of upholding democracy, and other issues of mutual interest.”

The statement said that Biden “thanked President Arévalo for his leadership in hosting the next Los Angeles Declaration for Protection and Migration Summit planned for later this spring and emphasized the importance of continuing to advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s Strategy For Addressing the Root Causes of Migration in Central America.”
