Russia pushes further into eastern Ukraine

Days before a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Russian forces moved deeper into eastern Ukraine, raising concerns among European leaders about a potential peace deal that could leave Ukraine with reduced territory. Pursuing the Kremlin’s goal of capturing all of Donetsk region, Russian units advanced near the mining town of Dobropillia, in one of this year’s largest offensives. Ukraine’s military reported heavy fighting in the area.

US, Pakistan to expand cooperation against militants

The United States and Pakistan agreed to deepen joint efforts against armed groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), ISIS-Khorasan and the Pakistani Taliban. The announcement came in Islamabad on Tuesday, a day after Washington designated the BLA as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO).

Nigerian air raids kill 592 in eight months

Nigeria’s air force says its operations in Borno state over the past eight months have killed 592 militia fighters. Air Chief Hasan Abubakar said strikes also destroyed more than 200 armed vehicles and 166 supply sites in a campaign targeting insurgents in the violence-hit northeast.

Typhoon disrupts travel in Taiwan

Typhoon Podul hit Taiwan’s lightly populated southeast coast with winds reaching 191 kph, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights. The storm is forecast to move towards more populated western areas before making landfall in China’s Fujian province.

Court tells U.S. to restore UCLA funding

A US judge has ordered the Trump administration to reinstate part of the federal grant funding for the University of California, Los Angeles, which was frozen last week. The $584 million freeze followed Trump’s threat to withhold money from universities over protests against Israel’s war in Gaza.

Malaysia’s former PM Najib Razak allowed to seek house arrest

Malaysia’s top court ruled Wednesday that former prime minister Najib Razak can proceed with a legal attempt to secure house arrest. Najib has been in prison since 2022 over a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal.
