Al Jazeera journalist, 3 colleagues killed in Israeli strike in Gaza

Anas Al Sharif, a prominent Al Jazeera journalist, accused of heading a Hamas cell & being involved in rocket attacks on Israel, was killed along with three other journalists in an airstrike on Sunday.

The attack was condemned by journalists and rights groups from across the world. Before his death, Al Sharif had rejected claims multiple times by Israel that he was connected to Hamas. Al Jazeera also rejected assertions made by Israel.

Germany halts arms exports to Israel over Gaza expansion plans

Germany’s decision to restrict arms sales to Israel was prompted by Israel’s plans to expand military operations in Gaza, Chancellor Friedrich Merz told public broadcaster ARD on Sunday.

Merz said Berlin would not supply weapons to a conflict being pursued “exclusively by military means” and would instead focus on diplomatic efforts.

Australia, New Zealand plan UN recognition of Palestinian state in September

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday his country will recognise a Palestinian state at next month’s UN General Assembly. New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters said his government is also considering recognition, with a formal statement expected during the UN Leaders’ Week.

Trump vows to remove homeless from Washington DC, National Guard deployment possible

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said he plans to evict criminals and homeless people from the US capital, despite the city’s mayor insisting crime has not recently risen.

According to Reuters, a US official said the administration is preparing to send hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, a controversial measure Trump recently used in Los Angeles to quell immigration protests over local opposition.

Chinese coast guard expels Philippine vessels near Scarborough Shoal in disputed South China Sea

China’s coast guard said on Monday it took ‘necessary measures’ to drive away Philippine vessels from waters around Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.

The coast guard said it tracked, intercepted and forced the vessels to leave after they ignored warnings, describing the operation as “professional, standardised, legitimate and legal”, Reuters reported.

Russian strikes injure 12 in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine says

At least 12 people were injured in Russian strikes on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, the foreign ministry said on Sunday.

The attacks, carried out with guided aerial bombs, hit residential areas, a bus station and a clinic. One victim was rescued from rubble, the ministry said on X.
