With all due respect, I find this article creating disrepute to the office of President. I’ve always appreciated The Print’s style of putting uncensored opinions, taking no sides. But the opinion that says ‘President will have to pay his debt to Modi’ is simply scandalous. A president isn’t chosen by one person and neither he is president of one person. The moment he assumes the office, he has to act impartial. And that has been a trend , custom or anything you may say. So I request you to either make substantial changes to the article or I shall report it to the President’s office.
If one may say this with the most profound respect, the President should have no occasion to exercise discretion, for the identity of the next government to bear the stamp of his substantive – as opposed to titular – authority. Assuming that the verdict is badly fractured, leaving room for endless permutations and combinations, all that commerce and deal making should take place far beyond the sylvan surroundings of Rashtrapati Bhavan. An invitation to form the next government should not become the basis on which a majority can be engineered. 2. After the experience of 1996, the concept of single largest party has no meaning. Signed letters of support, aggregating to 272, should be tendered to the President’s office. Before that stage is arrived at, leaders of various parties could be granted an audience. Many institutions have wobbled, not this one.
