A Varanasi trial court On 8 April allowed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to study the Gyanvapi Mosque adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
The Gyanvapi management had appealed the HC in 1998 to decide whether a civil suit in the case is barred under a 1991 law. The HC completed hearings only last month.
SC said in 2019 Ayodhya verdict that status of no other place of worship will be allowed to change. Yet, civil judge has ordered ASI to find if mosque is built over temple.
Top Muslim leaders said they would challenge the Varanasi court order while AIMIM questions legality of order. Opposition parties such as SP, BSP and TMC have refused to comment.
Hours after the Varanasi court gave its ruling, Sunni Central Waqf Board chairman Zufar Ahmad Farooqui said the order will be challenged in the high court.
