Indian exam system is based on how much a student can cram in his brain and puke on his answer sheet. No wonder there is very little innovation in India. Our questions has pattern and anyone with some common sense can do well if he or she solves the last five years question papers.
Yes, I agree with Prof Dinesh Singh that IIT mania has done more harm than good. Best of the Indian brains don’t get a chance to think differently. Mostly, they are tested in entrance test for their understanding of what is well known in the text book with a levels above the school curriculum. There is no way to judge the ability of students to think differently and innovatively. Selection is based on the ability of students to reproduce what is given in text books but not on their ability to be different. That’s why turion centers can make you clear the examination and not the school training. For this designing of entrance test pattern of IIT is also equally culprit.
Our system is devised to remember not to know. Our exams test our memory not our understanding. This has to change. Not all have the ability to remember or rote learn. Testing methods should be different as we are all different. We have done great injustice to so many bright students by failing them.
Reliance was founded by a dropout. Microsoft by dropout, IPhone by dropout, etc etc these guys had experience.. which helped build skill and understanding…. this is what is needed
Our systems should change
So what is your prescription? People like you should give a detailed alternative to the current education system. The student are after IITs due to their brand tag which will give a few very good placement and other entry into IIm or civil services. The IIT directors and staff should break the unnecessary charm of IITs and the media should also do the same instead of glorifying it to insult all other institutions and their students.
I will love you forever for this piece !
I am a father of two most wonderful kids and I know how kids react to peer pressure ….. kids in India are so underutilized in their own potential and we are miles from realizing it!
In this context and if we choose to be like this, India will always be a follower country than a leading one !

India is already suffering from poor standards of our universities. If views of this article are followed, we will be a laughing stock in Asia. The glory IIT’s have achieved today is only because of their entrance test.
