It was in December 2019 that the UN General Assembly decided to designate 20th July as International Chess Day, inviting all member states to acknowledge the role of International Chess Federation (FIDE) in supporting international cooperation for chess, as an ancient, intellectual and cultural game combining sport, science and art.
As of 20 July, 2025, there have been 2,101 grandmaster titles from over 90 countries, with FIDE—founded in 1924—having more than 200 federations.
The board game, originating in ancient India, has more than 2,000 possible variations to play and is continued to be enjoyed by chess aficionados across the borders, with championships and tournaments taking place in both offline and online mode.
