(Reuters) – Sheffield United captain Chris Basham has undergone surgery on his broken ankle and will have another operation after suffering a serious injury in his team’s 3-1 loss at Fulham.

Basham went over on his ankle when attempting a cross and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after a lengthy break in play.

Basham received a standing ovation and gave the crowd a thumbs-up before he was put into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

“Devastated with my injury in yesterday’s game, had my first operation to clean things up and will have a second this week to make things right,” Basham wrote on Instagram on Sunday.

“Would like to thank the football world for their support in messages and social media posts, all my close friends and family, to Sheffield united for taking care of me and Fulham for their support in the process, Tim Ream for being there and putting football aside.”

Fulham’s Ream was the first player to check on Basham and console the 35-year-old after he fell to the ground in agony.

United are bottom of the Premier League without a win.
