New Delhi, Apr 8 (PTI) Ousted Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Aminul Islam Bulbul has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) seeking intervention after he was removed by the country’s National Sports Council, but the plea is unlikely to find much traction within the world body.
Former national cricket team captain Bulbul’s appeal comes under scrutiny as ICC insiders point to what they describe as a clear contradiction in his stance on government interference.
During his tenure, Bulbul had earlier informed the ICC that the Bangladesh government had not permitted the national team to travel to India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, effectively citing official directives for non-participation.
However, in his latest communication, he has alleged that his removal amounts to government interference, in violation of the ICC charter, which reeks of “double standards”, many in ICC feel.
An ICC Director, speaking on condition of anonymity, called out the inconsistency in strong terms.
“It is surprising that the same Bangladesh Cricket Board president, who cited the Bangladesh government’s instruction to not play in India as the reason for its non-participation in the recently-concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in complete disregard of a binding Members Participation Agreement with the ICC, is now seeking protection from the ICC and its constitution from an enquiry by and directive of its government,” an ICC Director said.
The development has weakened Bulbul’s case, with sources indicating that the ICC is unlikely to act on his complaint given the perceived “double standard” nature in his position.
Meanwhile, former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as interim president of an 11-member ad-hoc committee formed to run the BCB.
The committee has been tasked to conduct fresh elections within the next 90 days, effectively marking a transition phase in Bangladesh cricket administration following Bulbul’s removal.
The situation adds another layer of complexity to governance issues within the BCB, even as the ICC traditionally maintains a cautious approach in matters involving alleged government interference, assessing each case within the framework of its constitutional provisions. PTI KHS SSC SSC
