New Delhi: The book ‘A Kashmiri Century — Portrait Of A Society In Flux‘ offers a glimpse into the lives of Kashmiris —Hindus and Muslims alike — and how their existence revolved around the simple pleasures of life.
The book, written by former cabinet minister Khem Lata Wakhlu and published by Harper Collins India, will be released on 12 July on ‘Soft Cover’, ThePrint’s e-venue to launch select non-fiction books.
The book delves deep into the lives of people living in the Valley, an aspect that’s often missing in the cold treatises on Kashmir.
The book offers the readers a glimpse of the Kashmir that her generation, her parents, and her grandparents grew up in. It is an all-encompassing view of Kashmiri ethos and culture.
Wakhlu, a native Kashmiri writer, who has also held positions of power in the National Conference, the Awami National Congress and Indian National Congress, has an enviable grasp on the socio-economic issues in the Kashmir Valley. She was also a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly for 12 years, and minister of tourism in the state from 1984 to 1986. She was chairperson of the state’s welfare board and a cabinet minister from 2010-2014. She continues to serve as senior advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee.
