New Delhi: “The people of Delhi have told us to focus on positive politics,” Aam Aadmi Party national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told cadres Wednesday after his party swept the capital’s civic polls, ending rival BJP’s 15-year run in it.

“I congratulate the people of Delhi for this win and thank them for bringing change,” Kejriwal said at the party’s headquarters after results came in.

The AAP leader also said he needed the Centre’s cooperation and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s blessings to make Delhi a better city.

Of the 250 seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the AAP won 134 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party 104, the Congress 9 and the Independents bagged three.

Speaking to jubilant party workers, Kejriwal said: “We need to clean Delhi, and we definitely need the cooperation of the BJP, the Congress and the blessings of the Centre and our Prime Minister. Children, women, the youth and senior citizens… Everybody will have a job to do. The city’s 2 crore people will clean the capital.”

He urged members of all political parties to come together to improve Delhi, thanking citizens for choosing their “son and brother” to run the corporation.

“There is no corruption in the Delhi government and the same shall prevail in the civic body,” Kejriwal said, adding that the “existing system of corruption and bribery (under BJP)” would be ended.

The chief minister said that people often told him just hard work would not win him laurels in politics, he had to be abusive too. “But we are dignified people, and we must earn the people’s respect. With these results, Delhi has sent a message to India — good schools and hospitals can also win you votes,” he said.

Kejriwal then laid out a long list of to-dos before his workers – “We have to fix schools, hospitals, roads, electricity and water.”
