New Delhi: Adipurush, a film based on the mythology Ramayana, has sparked controversy over its dialogues, especially those used for a character resembling the Hindu deity, Hanuman.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party MP Priyanka Chaturvedi demanded an apology from director Om Raut and dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir Saturday, for hurting the sensibilities of Indians by using “pedestrian” language for the revered deities.

She also accused them of crossing all boundaries of maryada (dignity) for quick box office success.

The movie, which was released in theatres Friday, features several prominent actors, including Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon. The character of Bajrang (resembling Hanuman) has been played by Devdatta Nage.

“The dialogue writer of Adipurush Manoj Muntashir as well as the director should apologise to the nation for the pedestrian dialogues written for the movie, especially for Lord Hanuman. It hurts every Indian’s sensibilities to see the kind of language being attributed to our revered gods in the name of entertainment,” Chaturvedi tweeted Saturday.

Other political leaders, such as former Congress MP Dr Ajoy Kumar, have also slammed the film’s dialogues as “shoddy” and “unacceptable”.

“This is Ramayana..the virtuous story of Lord Siya Ram! How can we have such ‘shoddy dialogues’ for our epic tale? Whoever wrote…should be ashamed!,” he tweeted.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel meanwhile, attacked the central government and the censor board for approving a film “which is playing with our faith, making fun of our idol”.

Calling for an apology from those responsible, he added, the central government will have to answer this.

Critics give mixed review

The film, which features Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh, has received mixed reviews on social media. While some have praised the film’s visuals, graphics and action, others have called it a huge mess and an “epic disappointment”.

Criticising the film, film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, “(Adipurush) just doesn’t meet the mammoth expectations… Director Om Raut had a dream cast and a massive budget on hand, but (he) creates a Huge Mess.”

However, another critic, Rohit Jaiswal, called it “new age execution”.  “New age execution, new way of presentation, great visuals, excellent graphics,” he tweeted.

He also said that the last 30 minutes of the film were outstanding.
