Debunking anti-ageing myths. Treatments, luxury creams can’t rewind the biological clock

High-end skincare products may feel luxurious, but they aren’t magic potions. When taking care of your skin, what you need is consistency, not a gold-plated jar of moisturiser.

Every week, a new miracle cream or treatment claims to promise eternal youth. On social media, TikTok trends suggest ways to slow down or even stop ageing. However, anti-ageing isn’t about chasing the fountain of youth through machines and potions. 

As a dermatologist with over 13 years of experience, I can attest that most of these claims are just fluff. 

Let’s debunk some myths about anti-ageing that are doing rounds everywhere—from WhatsApp groups to influencer posts to advertisements.

Anti-ageing treatments = eternal youth

Wouldn’t it be great if a single session of botox or laser treatment could freeze us at 25 forever? The reality is that these treatments, at best, hit a ‘snooze’ button on ageing—they don’t stop the clock. That post-surgery glow-up is temporary. Eventually, wrinkles will return. So, enjoy the short-lived perks, but don’t rely on machines to turn back your biological clock.

No machine can permanently ‘fix’ ageing, including SmartXide2, which we used in my clinic in 2010.

So, what’s the secret? It’s in your lifestyle and mindset. 

Expensive skincare products will save you

Let’s be real. Spending half of your pay cheque on a cream with a French name wouldn’t make you look like a Kardashian. High-end skincare products may feel luxurious, but they aren’t magic potions. When it comes to taking care of your skin, what you need is consistency, not a gold-plated jar of moisturiser.

Save your money and invest in the basics: hydration—yes, the good old 3-4 litres of water a day—sunscreen, and sleep. And please, never sleep with makeup on, as it can lead to premature wrinkles, clogged pores, and all sorts of skin drama.

Anti-ageing is all about skincare

Skincare is important, but anti-ageing is much more holistic. Eating nutrient-dense foods rich in antioxidants, managing stress, staying active, and practising mindfulness are key. You could use multiple high-end products and undergo the fanciest treatments, but if you’re eating junk and stressing 24/7, it will reflect on your skin.

Age is just a number

This one is more of a misunderstood concept than a myth. You’ve probably heard someone say that “age is just a number”, but here’s the tea—it’s more of a mind game. People who age “gracefully” are often those who don’t obsess over every wrinkle or grey hair. They’re content with themselves, which leads to less stress and, in turn, slows the ageing process.

A healthy, active lifestyle and a positive mindset are key players here. Ever notice how some people seem to age like fine wine? That’s because they’re living their best, stress-free lives. So, focus on being happy, and your skin will thank you for it. 

More water = fewer wrinkles

While drinking water won’t magically erase wrinkles, it does help your skin stay hydrated, making you look fresher overall. But chugging down gallons in one go isn’t wise. Instead, sip water throughout the day to allow your body to absorb that good hydration.

Hydrating from the inside out is as important as slathering those fancy moisturisers on your face. And remember, no amount of water will save your skin from sun damage if you’re skipping sunscreen.

Instant results = magic? Not So Fast!

Skincare products that promise—some even ‘guarantee’—overnight results usually offer only a temporary glow. While some products might give you that quick-tightening, “wow-I-look-amazing” effect, lasting results take time. 

You should expect weeks, maybe even months, to see any real changes in your skin, depending on the products you use.

So, how do you know if your skincare is working? First off, be patient. Stick to your routine and monitor your progress—taking selfies could be a great way to track changes. And remember, just because something tingles or burns doesn’t mean it’s working; it might be your skin screaming for help. 

When trying out new active ingredientslike Vitamin A or C—I recommend to start low and go slow. Give your skin some time to adjust, so you don’t end up dealing with irritation.

The bottom line is that feeling like a product is working doesn’t always mean it actually is. If your skin is throwing a tantrum, reach out to your dermatologist for advice.

So, what really works?

Here’s the unfiltered truth: there’s no one-size-fits-all anti-ageing solution, but maintaining a healthy mind and lifestyle is your best bet. Stress less, eat nutrient-rich foods, stay active, and never forget to use sunscreen. Those botox and laser treatments can offer a temporary boost, but they’re not the key to eternal youth.

Science-backed skincare MVPs

Not all skincare is just hype; some ingredients are genuinely game-changers. For example, niacinamide is great for levelling up the skin tone. Retinoids are collagen-boosting superheroes that help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

Then there is hyaluronic acid—the ultimate hydration BFF that keeps your skin plump and bouncy. And don’t forget Vitamin C, which is a multitasker that heals wounds, fights off UV damage, and reduces wrinkles, dark spots, and even acne.

The best “anti-ageing” advice? Live a life you’re proud of. Laugh more, stress less, and take care of your body and mind. That glow? It’ll follow naturally.
