As an MOS in the Railway Ministry, Manoj Sinha’s contributions in adoption and implementation of the Rail Projects, not only in Ghazipur but also outside areas of eastern UP beyond this constituency, have been of enormous proportions – almost unequalled so far. In fact, Manoj Ji has added a chapter towards the fulfillment of the dreams of Vishwanath Singh Gahmari who had represented this constituency during 1962-27. In his impassioned speech made in the House in presence of Pt Nehru, he had given a graphic description of poverty by stating how the poor people mopped out undigested grains from the cow-dung and ate them after cooking to stisfy their hunger. A commission of enquiry had been set up after which steps were initiated and were some consummated also but the rest somehow could not be taken to their logical ends. Manoj Ji deserves kudos for initiating some steps to fill up that vacuum. Even a devil must be given his due, as they say.
I am able to say all this because I was born and brought up in this district which is part of the dark hinterland which encompasses almost the entire eastern UP. It was a freak that I studied in the Universities at Banaras and Allahabad and eventually entered the IAS. Having experienced hardships in my early life, I have been privy to the conditions under which the poor live. It was not without reason that the Mahatma had laid down that every action should be weighed against the extent to which it is going to wipe the tears of the lowliest. And this would be possible only when politics again becomes a means of mass action for ushering in public good. The idea is utopian bt practicable, although it casts a heavy burde on the people who are elected to the Parliament or the State Legislature. I view Manoj Sinha as one such elected representative in his individual capacity.
