New Delhi: Friday marked Ranjan Gogoi’s last working day as Chief Justice of India (CJI), capping a judicial career of nearly 19 years. Gogoi, who took over as CJI in October 2018, retires 17 November, but attended a farewell tea-party in Supreme Court Friday.
The outgoing CJI also held a video conference with over 650 high court judges and judicial officers from his chambers. In his address, he commended their commitment to upholding the country’s judiciary, and reminded them that their conduct, both inside and outside the court, is what sets them apart from public servants at their station.
He also spoke about the complex functioning of the court, saying it was “unique in the sense that the deliverables do not conform to a single chain of command”, and neither of the multiple stake-holders are under the control or command of the other.
“In my view self-regulation and self-realisation amongst the members of the Bar that they are officers of the Court would be a better way ahead then any legislative mandate that might come in case the citizenry make it their focus in a democracy to usher in such
a change,” he added.
